15 complete tales of audio fiction for you! View in browser

It's Our 1 Year Anniversary!

Issue #52 | 31 Aug 2023

This crazy experiment focusing on finished audio fiction started 52 weeks ago—and we're still here and going strong!

I had hoped to have a brand new website and newsletter template launched today, but I underestimated the effort. Which is a nice way to say I overestimated my own design skills. Which are very, very poor. If you happen to be a CSS wizard with Webflow experience, I desperately need your help. Please? Just reply to this email.

The featured titles this week are blasts from the past. Not a lot of people were reading in the early days of this newsletter, so I'm giving some extra love to the shows I've been most drawn to over the years. If they passed you by, enjoy them now!

Also, there are a lot of entries in the New Seasons Coming Soon section. And it looks like there will be for a few weeks. You'll see what I mean.

Let's get into it, shall we?

Featured Audio Fiction

I've listened to every episode of these two shows, and proudly recommend them to you. As with all things in life, YMMV.

Midst

Narrated trippy scifi fantasy from Third Person & Critical Role

Three mischievous narrators spin a surreal, reality-bending, sci-fantasy space western about a crotchety outlaw, a struggling cultist, and a diabolical bastard making awful decisions in a world on the edge of disaster.

Engage your imagination in this highly original setting using a unique storytelling style, distinctive audio, and lightly animated visual accompaniments to help ground you in this bizarre, space-western world.

Midst was acquired by Critical Role in early 2023. Episodes have been remastered, and additional assets are available on the show's website.

  • Season 1 finale re-released 2 Aug 2023
  • 19 episodes
  • Listening time: 7h 10m
  • Season 2 now re-releasing
  • 🌀👁️🌔

Evo's notes: This is the kind of show I can listen to over and over again. It's very trippy, nearly impossible to categorize, and a serious departure from "normal" audio fiction.

The Book of Constellations

Narrated scifi series from W. Keith Tims & Alien Ghost Robot

A down-to-Earth sci-fi road trip, The Book of Constellations is a story about Rael, who claims to be the sole survivor of an alien race, as told by Simon, the man who went with him. On a quest to save humanity from the same malevolent force that destroyed his own people, Rael believes this “Darkness” resides in the Governor of the state. Rael makes his way west to the Capitol armed with nothing but his uncanny perception and empathy. He gathers allies along the way from the forgotten and lost of America. Rael’s obsession won’t allow him to mourn another world, but how far is he willing to go to save us?

  • Season 1 finale released 29 Nov 2021

Evo's notes: Cozy. That's a quick way to summarize how I felt listening to this show. A surprising feeling given the topic, for sure. Listen and see what you think.
